Social Media are websites, applications, and other platforms that are used to create, share, and distribute, and participate in social networking. Some of the most popular social media websites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Youtube, Google Plus, Reddit, Flickr, Meetup, although there are almost too many resources to count at this point. Social Media is a preferred method of communication for many young people today and it is becoming increasingly used in the classroom as well to share ideas and create a classroom that is endless in content. Social media can be used to share content and information, encourage debate and answer questions (possibly using hashtags) to create online discussion communities for students.

3. Social Media Gains Momentum in Online Education: Talks about how social media is becoming more popular to help students build a sense of community.
Activity for Application:
Here are a few ways I can start getting teachers to use social media in the classroom:
1. Create a Class Facebook Page
2. Create a class hashtag. This can be checked regularly to see what students are talking about online. Teachers can also create a Twitter channel.
3. Use Skype or other Online communication to set up guest speakers or online tours.
4. Create a class blog. Allow students to comment.
5. Try Scoop.it - a great site for any kind of current news items your class follows.
6. Have students create Pinterest Pages as a way of introducing themselves or pinning ideas on certain topics.
7. Use Youtube to host a student show or host a podcast.
8. Show case student work on Instagram.
9. Create online discussions that engage students and create community. Consider adding students from around the country, or even the world.
It is extremely important for teachers at CCHS to understand how to use social media and to teach students how to be responsible users of Social Media. By brining Social Media into the classroom we can monitor student use and help them gain skills to be used in the future.
